These portraits were made mostly from 1998-2000. They were made with a 4x5 camera, with natural light in my home studio in Brooklyn, NY.

The large-format camera and film captures a tremendous amount of detail, and as I used it, remains stationary. These portraits are as direct and unadorned as possible: no decisive moment, just the architecture of the face, in time, in two views. They ask the question: does surface equal substance?
