As I photographed Downtown Brooklyn, lugging my view camera through the streets over the course of a few years, I dreamt of the book I would want to make. Jonathan Lethem's writing described Brooklyn in just the kind of vivid, evocative detail I found so intriguing there. I thought: his writing, my photographs, that would be ideal. So I wrote him a letter, and this book is the result.
