Siding
Looking at Siding entails a suspension of disbelief; about a particular shade of pink or green "wood" for example, or the overly smooth regularity of a wall of "brick." I am not concerned with establishing a precise scale or a context, but with an accurate representation of the material.
These photographs seek to seduce with texture and pattern and light into the terrain of pure surface, order, small variation in a field of repetition, mesmerizing pattern. Gradually it becomes clear: these are houses. Why do we house ourselves in these kinds of clothes, these utterly shameless imitations of still other surfaces?
These photographs were all made in Williamsburg, Brooklyn between 2000-2003. They were made on a large-format camera on color negative film.
